A survey from summer 2023 shows that 7 out of 10 adult residents in British Columbia have participated in outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing or canoeing, in the past year. and their ages are between 18 to 34.
Another survey from 2019 shows that 3 of 5 residents in British Columbia grow plants at home, 29% of them grows plants for consumption (44% of them are between 18 to 35 years old, 35% of them are between 35 to 54 years old and the 21% left are 55+ years old.
In Reddit, the subreddit r/PlantIdentification has more than 100 members have been asked for plants in British Columbia by September 2024.
By the summer of 2024, I conducted 4 interviews to botanist students in Vancouver and this is the insight:
A regular scouting session for a botanist students will start walking in the nature, looking for certain plants according to the surroundings, this also consider other plants as different species may grow together.
They have to carry books, notes and sometimes charts as instruments to identify plants (from 700g/1.5 lb up to 3 kilos/ 6.6 lb). If the plant scouting is deep in the nature, they ended carrying their instruments on top of their hiking essentials (up to 10kg/22.2lb), making the experience uncomfortable and less motivating. They’re carrying their phone all the time.
Statistics Canada also shows the 60% of the population in British Columbia are between 15 to 64 years old, with the average age of 43. It also shows that the majority of population lives in Vancouver (2.6 out of 5.6 million of people).
In British Columbia, according to the census made in 2021, approximately 30% of the population are foreign-born. It is estimated that a significant portion of young adults in this age range are first-generation immigrants, given the province's overall immigrant population. Between 2016 and 2021, over 100,000 immigrants arrived in the province, many of whom are young adults.
Also loneliness is a feel very present among Vancouverites, in a survey made in 2023 from Maru Voice Canada shows that 34% of people feel lonely and depress (54% are between 18 to 34 years old, 36% are between 35 - 54 years old).
